The federal government of Canada acknowledges the widespread problem of labour shortages in many skilled trade’ occupations, which affects municipalities and cities across the country. As a consequence of this, the Federal Skilled Trades program is the only economic immigration program run by the federal government that specifically targets workers in trades’ occupations.
The required minimum results for the speaking and listening components of the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) are level 5, and the required minimum results for the reading and writing components are level 4.
Have a minimum of two years of full-time work experience (or the equivalent in part-time work experience) in the skilled profession during the past five years, or have the equivalent amount of experience gained through part-time work. Be able to demonstrate that the skills and experience gained cover the essential duties of the occupation; and have a full-time offer of employment in that skilled trade for a period of at least one year from up to two Canadian employers; OR be in possession of a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade from a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.
The following categories of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) are used to categorize the skilled trades that are available under the Federal Skilled Trades Program. Major Group 72, which includes the building, electrical, and industrial trades Maintenance and equipment operation trades make up the majority of Group 73. Supervisory and technical work in natural resources, agriculture, and related production fall under the purview of Major Group 82. Supervisors in the processing and manufacturing industries, as well as those working in utilities, make up Major Group 92 and finally Minority Group 632, which is comprised of cooks and chefs.
